These Zulu woven grass pots are known is South Africa as Beer baskets or herb baskets and get their name from when the Zulu people use to store their ingredients to make beer in these various deferent size pots.
Made from natural fibers such as grass and reed the Zulu grass pots are set with the traditional Zulu patterns and colors of the Zulu tribe. Different Zulu villages would have different patterns on their pots that would be symbolic to that village. Zulu basketry and weavery have become world famous and even though there are fewer and fewer Zulu woman making these pots there still lives a few rural village woman that are teaching their talents to the younger generation and will hopefully keep this wonderful tradition alive.
Because of the nature of handcrafted woven pot each plate will be similar but not identical to the picture. There will be slight variances between each woven pot which adds to the uniqueness of the each individual African grass pot.
